Washington Nationals: “The Road to DC” Player Profile Series
How does a Major League Baseball organization give its fanbase a genuine look at the next generation of players — the people behind the jerseys, not just the highlights?
The Washington Nationals came to K2 Productions with a specific goal: to take four of their top prospects and show fans who they actually are. Not a highlight reel. Not a media day. A real look at the chemistry, the personality, and the mentality of players making their way through the farm system toward the majors. “The Road to DC” — a behind-the-scenes player profile series K2 has produced for the Nationals across multiple years.
The Work
K2 spent a few days with the Nationals’ prospects — at practices, in conversations between sessions, in the moments that don’t make the scoreboard. The production combined scripted direction to give the series structure and flow with real, unscripted interviews that captured each player’s genuine personality.
The full production scope:
- Creative direction and script development — giving the series a narrative structure that worked across multiple player profiles
- Director on set throughout — building rapport with each player before the camera rolled
- Interview production — creating an environment where players who are elite on the field felt comfortable and natural on camera
- B-roll and practice coverage — capturing the chemistry and competitive energy between prospects
- Full post-production — editing, color, and delivery of the finished series
Directing Athletes on Camera
The players featured in “The Road to DC” are among the best young baseball prospects in the country. Being filmed for a documentary series is a different kind of pressure — and the content only works if the players forget the camera is there.
Kevin Eller, K2’s Senior Director, spent time with each prospect before filming began — at practices, observing how they interact, getting a feel for the team’s dynamic. That investment before the camera rolled is what made the interviews feel like conversations rather than performances. The script gave the series its direction. The real moments gave it its character.
What the Series Was Built to Do
“The Road to DC” was built around a specific idea: when fans know the person behind the player, the game becomes more meaningful. Four prospects, their chemistry, their work ethic, their personalities away from the field — captured over a few days and delivered as a series that gives the Nationals fanbase a genuine connection to the next generation of the team.
